“What is it like to be in love?”

“Free. It feels free, like there’s nothing that can stop me, nothing can hold me down.
It feels as if I can do anything because of love and I’m free of the fear of failure because,
even if I can’t do everything, at least at the end of the day,
there’s still me and him. When all else fails, love won’t.”

[088] Inappropriate for All Ages

theme: o88. Numbers

rate: PG
words: 1721

They were band mates, they were friends - the Leader and the Magnae. They sat opposite each other at the dining table, glaring at one another, daring the other to make a move. The elder cracked his knuckles threateningly. The younger crossed his arms defiantly.

Donghae, Shindong and Kangin - who was visiting the dorm - all sat on the couch, watching with silent awe. Hankyung stood in the archway between the living room and the kitchen.

“G-g-guys, I can just make more,” Hankyung insisted,

“NO!” They both exclaimed in unison,

“This is about principle!” Eeteuk declared,

“This is about honour!” Kyuhyun exclaimed,

“This is about a bowl of Hankyung’s Beijing fried rice,” Heechul huffed from the computer. He rolled his eyes, “Stop trying to glorify your pathetic fight.”

“It’s about more than a bowl of rice!” They retorted in unison,

“It’s about principle!” Eeteuk repeated,

“It’s about honour!” Kyuhyun repeated,

“It’s your fault,” Heechul threw his slipper at Kangin’s head, “If you hadn’t come over unexpected for lunch, we would’ve had enough rice for everyone.”

Kangin made to go after Heechul but Shindong and Donghae stopped him, “Heechul-sshi has a point,” Shindong said matter-of-factly,

“You could’ve phoned like Kyuhyun did,” Donghae added solemnly.

Eeteuk put one hand on the single bowl of rice that lay on the table between them, “I should get it - I’m older.”

“I should get it because I’m younger!” Kyuhyun replied, putting a hand on the other side of the bowl,

Eeteuk slid it closer to himself, “Older people need food for strength!”

Kyuhyun slid it back towards himself, “Younger people need food to grow!”

“You’re already taller than me - you don’t need to grow!” Eeteuk exclaimed, grabbing the bowl with both hands now,

“And I would like to reach your age one day!” Kyuhyun countered, clasping his other hand on the bowl as well.

“I am not THAT old!” Eeteuk huffed straightening, hands on his hips as he glared at his dongsaeng,

“You’re the one that brought up age - you ALWAYS bring up your age,” Kyuhyun accused, crossing his arms over his chest as he glared back at his hyung.

“Well, you know the say: fine things get better with age,” Eeteuk snapped,

“They also say: the younger they are, the fresher they are, the better they are,” Kyuhyun retorted. Suddenly, Kyuhyun smirked, “I have a challenge for you, hyung. We’ll go to the mall and talk to random girls. Whoever gets the most phone numbers in a certain amount of time wins.”

“And what would this person win?” Eeteuk replied suspiciously,

“The argument whether it’s better to be old,” Kyuhyun gestured towards Eeteuk, “Or young,” he gestured towards himself, “And they would get Hankyung’s last bowl of Beijing fried rice.” He offered his hand.

Eeteuk pursed his lips in thoughts before taking Kyuhyun’s hand and shaking over it. The moment the door closed after them, Hankyung turned to the other members,

“Is it even about rice anymore?” Hankyung asked, scratching his head in confusion,

“Apparently it was never about rice,” Heechul shook his head with disbelief as he turned back to the computer.

“I would never accept that challenge,” Shindong said to Donghae, “the rice would be cold once you get home, who’d want to win cold rice?”

Kangin got up and walked over to the door, pulling on his shoes, “I’ll make sure they don’t kill each other,” he sighed as he opened the front door, “Or worse, make fools of Super Junior.”

Kangin sat in one corner of the food court, watching Eeteuk and Kyuhyun approach random girls or groups of girls and sweet talk them for their phone numbers. So, when someone slid into the seat beside him, he nearly jumped at the sudden companion,

“Calm down, Kangin-sshi,” Sungmin grinned as he looked out towards the many other tables, “What are Eeteuk-sshi and Kyu-sshi doing?”

“Trying to get as many phone numbers as possible,” Kangin said as he leaned an elbow on the table and placed his chin in his hand, “It’s a challenge they have to win an argument.”

“Oh, sounds fun,” Sungmin said, his fox-like eyes dancing,

“Oh- it’s more fun watching,” Kangin snorted, “Some of their opening lines are super cheesy to down-right lame.”

Sungmin laughed, “So, something like ‘Did it hurt when you fell from heaven?’?” Kangin pointed with his free hand towards Eeteuk. Sungmin gaped, “He used that line!?”

“Something akin to it. His was more like ‘One of my names is Angel and I’m pretty sure I saw you last time I was in heaven’… or something to that affect,” Kangin muttered,

Sungmin shook his head, “What!? Hyung - I used to respect you!” He muttered in disbelief as he watched Eeteuk hand over a pen and clean napkin to a girl for, what Sungmin assumed, was a phone number. He glanced over at Kyuhyun who was sitting with a group of girls, “And Kyuhyun? He’s not being too charming I hope.”

Kangin glanced at Sungmin before replying, “Oh, one of his lines was ‘I’m lost and I can’t remember my number, so can I have yours instead?’.”

“It did not work,” Sungmin stated with confidence.

Kangin took a swig of the water bottle before him, “Oh, but it did work.”

“At least they’re not using Super Junior as a means to get numbers,” Sungmin said, crossing his arms atop the table and leaning his chin on his arms, “That would be…” He paused when Kangin grew silent. He gave him a side-long glance, “They didn’t! They did?”

Kangin gave a small shrug as he capped his water bottle, “Eeteuk told a girl ‘I’m a famous singer’ and she replied ‘Sorry, H.O.T. was before my time’.”

Sungmin burst out laughing, “How did hyung take that!?”

“Not well. He said he’d send her picture to the E.L.F.s,” Kangin replied solemnly,

“And what did Kyuhyun say?” Sungmin prompted,

“He actually told a small group of girls ‘Don’t you recognize me from Super Junior?’ and they all replied, ‘Sorry, we’re Cassiopeia’.” Kangin answered in a flat tone,

Sungmin had to wipe away tears this time while he laughed, “What did Kyuhyun say afterwards?”

“He told them that he was planning to break up Yunho and Jaejoong,” Kangin replied. He sighed heavily, “Those Cassiopeia did not like that.”

Sungmin’s jaw dropped, “What happened?”

“Nothing really, besides Kyuhyun having to hide in the bathroom for a good fifteen minutes before they gave up looking for him,” Kangin stated simply,

“Scary…” Sungmin muttered as he watched both Eeteuk and Kyuhyun move again to different tables, “How much longer is this going to last?”

Kangin glanced down at his watch. He pulled out his cellular phone and dialled. Sungmin watched as Eeteuk pulled out his own phone, “Hello Eeteuk-sshi? This is your last table, time’s up.” Then he hung up and dialled another number. This time, Sungmin noticed that Kyuhyun took out his cell phone, “Kyu-sshi? This is your last chance, time’s up.” He hung up and pocketed his phone, “Now the real fun begins.”

“Oh?” Sungmin looked at him sceptically,

“After they’re done, we get to count up the numbers,“ Kangin explained, “And fortunately for our entertainment, they’re both sore losers.”

“I DEMAND A RECOUNT!” Eeteuk exclaimed, jumping to his feet.

“We’ve counted it three times,” Kangin said dryly as he stood up from the couch, stretching out his limbs.

“Just admit it hyung, I win,” Kyuhyun teased in a sing-song voice, a bright smile on his face,

Sungmin eyed the magnae bitterly, “It just means you’re more of a sl-”

Kangin covered Sungmin’s mouth with his hand immediately, “Kyuhyun, I’ll give you money and you can go buy ice cream to celebrate.”

Kyuhyun’s eyes lit up immediately as he grinned, holding out his hand, “Deal! The rice is cold anyway.”

Kangin smirked as he fished into his jeans’ pocket for some won. Finding some crumpled bills, he slapped them into his dongsaeng’s waiting hand. “Go have fun celebrating.”

“Whoo! Ice cream!” Kyuhyun cried happily as he ran to the door and began tugging on his shoes,

“WAIT!” Sungmin called. He was leaning over the coffee table going through Kyuhyun’s pile of napkin-scribbled phone numbers, “All these numbers have a one digit difference,” he muttered as he sifted through the napkins, “There is no way all of these are real phone numbers.”

Eeteuk’s gaze rose to Kyuhyun who stood frozen by the door, one shoe on, the other one hanging from one of the dongsaeng’s fingers, “You. CHEATED!”

“Aish, looks like I’ve been found out,” Kyuhyun chuckled sheepishly, running his free hand through his hair, “Well… seeing as I already have money,” he paused as he bent over to put on his other shoe, “And I got myself all hyped up for ice cream - perhaps chocolate chip mint? I’m feeling for some mint - so I figure I might as well, go,” he stood up straight after tying his shoe and grinned at his hyungs, “So… it was fun, Eeteuk-sshi; let’s do it again sometime-”

“Kyuhyun…” Eeteuk grounded out,

“Bye!” Kyuhyun waggled his fingers at them before bolting out the door.

Sungmin stood up the moment the door closed and headed over to it, slipping on his shoes as well,

“Where are you going?” Kangin asked as he glanced up from the napkins,

“Make sure Kyuhyun doesn’t actually TRY to get REAL phone numbers,” Sungmin muttered resentfully as he practically threw open the door, and stormed out, the door slamming after him.

Kangin chuckled and shook his head as he began gathering up the napkins. “Don’t throw mine away,” Eeteuk stated as he plopped down on the couch, his arms crossed loosely about his torso, “They’re my proof that I truly won.”

Kangin sighed as he dropped all the napkins back on the table. He grabbed a pen that was lying on the coffee table, and grabbed an empty napkin. After scribbling something down he handed it over to Eeteuk as he sat down next to him, “That is the only number you need, hyung.”

Eeteuk glanced idly at the napkin before looking back a second time and actually staring at it. He gave Kangin a slanted look, “But… it’s just your cell number.”

Kangin leaned back against the couch, slinging an arm about Eeteuk’s shoulders, “Exactly.”
