“What is it like to be in love?”

“Free. It feels free, like there’s nothing that can stop me, nothing can hold me down.
It feels as if I can do anything because of love and I’m free of the fear of failure because,
even if I can’t do everything, at least at the end of the day,
there’s still me and him. When all else fails, love won’t.”

[031] What Shiwon Wants

Ryeowook had come over to the other dorm hoping to relax with the others on their one free day that month. However, when he arrived at the other dorm, no one was home but Donghae and Shiwon who was visiting. Also, by the sound of Donghae’s bedroom door slamming and Shiwon fuming on the couch, it was clear the couple just had an argument,

“What are you two fighting about now?” Ryeowook asked, sighing as he pulled off his shoes and padding over to sit on the couch beside Shiwon.

“Same old, same old,” Shiwon muttered, arms crossed over his chest as he glared at the dormant television.

“Not about who’d make a better looking action figure, JaeJoong-sshi or Yunho-sshi?” Ryeowook inquired,

“No, something else - but we both know Donghae’s just being biased on that argument because of Yunho!” Shiwon replied as he sat up straight and picked up the newspaper that was lying on the coffee table,

“Ever since you two started dating, you’re always fighting about something,” Ryeowook commented lightly,

“Yes, well… maybe it’s time I find someone else,” Shiwon said exasperatedly when suddenly his eyes widened while leafing through the newspaper, “That’s it!” He folded back the newspaper so the page he was on was on the front and showed it to Ryeowook,

“The… personals?” Ryeowook said,

“I’ll write a personal ad!” Shiwon stated, dimpling at his idea.

“You have got to be kidding me…” Ryeowook muttered as Shiwon got up and found a pen and pad of paper, “Dear god you’re not kidding…”

“Of course I’m not!” Shiwon said as he plopped back down on the couch, suddenly in a much better mood than just seconds ago; “Okay… now how can we describe me?” He began to chew on the end of his pen,

“You like moonlit walks on the beach?” Ryeowook offered lamely,

“No, that’s too common - too cliché… I know!” Shiwon began to scribble down words on the pad as he said aloud, “Likes midnight walks on the beach.”

“Midnight walks? Doesn’t that sound kind of odd?” Ryeowook questioned, eyes wide with shock, “Like… what kind of person - in their right mind - is up at midnight and… and walking? ON THE BEACH!?”

“But…” Shiwon looked up from his notes, “There’s moonlight, it’s night, you’re alone together - it’s very romantic, right?”

Ryeowook gave him a slanted look, “Hyung, I could say those exact descriptions on robbing a bank.”

Shiwon pursed his lips, “Fine, fine… we’ll hold off on that bit. How about describing the better aspects of my appearance?” Shiwon bit on his lip as he thought, “The only thing I like about myself is my smile.”

“Has a Joker-like smile?” Ryeowook offered as Shiwon began to write.

Suddenly, Shiwon began to scratch out what he had written, “Okay, so we don’t mention my smile. How about my height? I’m tall.”

Ryeowook looked him up and down, “Yeah, but they could be picturing someone taller and when they see you, you’ll seem shorter because you’re not what they expected.”

“But, not many people are taller than me,” Shiwon stated as he began to write about his height, “I mean, I’m tall even by Korean standards.”

“Isn’t Changmin-sshi taller than you?” Ryeowook asked.

Suddenly, Shiwon began to scratch out what he had written about himself being tall, “Okay, so we don’t mention my height. What else could I say in a personal ad about myself? My habitual hand gestures?”

Ryeowook shook his head, “No, they might just assume you work with hand puppets or that you’re a mime.”

Shiwon slumped back against the couch, crossing one knee over the other as he propped the notepad against his raised knee, “Well how am I supposed to write a personal ad without writing about myself?”

Ryeowook ran a hand through his hair, “Just say that you’re a member of Super Junior; that should be sufficient enough.”

Shiwon shook his head, “There are too many crazies doing that. I saw one saying that just now anyway.”

“Crazy indeed,” Ryeowook murmured as he glanced down at the newspaper still in his hands,

“What’s even crazier is that I think Heechul-hyung wrote it,” Shiwon said.

“Owns cat, loves pink, best singer and dancer of Super Junior… sounds like Heechul-sshi,” Ryeowook agreed as he closed the paper and tossed it back onto the coffee table, “Okay - how about we skip describing you right now and instead, we describe your ideal partner?”

“Ah! Yeah!” Shiwon sat up straighter as he began chewing on his pen again, “Has to be a good dancer.”

“Oh?” Ryeowook raised a curious eyebrow, “How come?”

“I love dancing, so… it would be nice to have someone who likes to dance too and can dance well,” Shiwon explained as he began a list, beginning with ‘a good dancer’.

“Makes sense,” Ryeowook nodded, “What else?”

“Loves to laugh,” Shiwon dictated as he wrote, “I love to laugh and - even though I don’t think I have the best sense of humour, I do like to laugh and smile. Being with someone who doesn’t like to laugh or smile would be very depressing.”

“Which is why frowning is often associated with depression,” Ryeowook rolled his eyes before prompting, “Anything else about your ideal partner?”

“Well… I don’t know if this makes me shallow or not, but they have to be shorter than me,” Shiwon said as he paused and bit down on the end of his pen, “It feels awkward when they’re taller, even if they’re my height. Shorter is very nice.”

“Is there a certain height you’d prefer?” Ryeowook asked as Shiwon began writing again,

“Yes, about as tall as my shoulder,” Shiwon answered, not looking up from the notepad, “The feel of someone leaning their head on my shoulder makes me feel needed and protective.”

“So… let me get this straight,” Ryeowook adjusted himself so he was facing Shiwon, one foot still on the ground, “Your ideal partner is a good dancer, loves to laugh and is short - as in, shoulder height to you?”

Shiwon glanced over his list before looking back at Ryeowook and nodded. Ryeowook gave him a slanted look, “Are you not aware that you just described Donghae?”

“I did not,” Shiwon argued as he looked back down at his list, trying to think of more things,

“Donghae is one of the best dancers in Super Junior,” Ryeowook began, “He loves to laugh and is usually smiling, AND he’s short - ACTUALLY, I’m pretty sure if we got him right now, we’d figure out he’s shoulder height to you!”

“You may have a point…” Shiwon muttered as he chewed on his pen,

“I do, I say you just forget about the personal ad and make up with Donghae,” Ryeowook sighed with a shake of his head,

“It doesn’t matter if we make up, we’re still too different,” Shiwon said simply, “You said it yourself, ever since we started dating, Donghae and I keep fighting about everything.”

“But if you two love each other then it shouldn’t matter how different you are,” Ryeowook commented,

“You should’ve been here during our fight,” Ryeowook and Shiwon looked up to find Donghae leaning a shoulder against the entranceway, “Could’ve helped my case.”

“What?” Ryeowook asked,

“The reason we fought earlier,” Shiwon muttered,

“It’s because I asked Shiwon if he loves me and he couldn’t answer,” Donghae explained, arms crossed loosely,

“It’s too early! We’ve only been dating a few weeks!” Shiwon defended, “And you can’t deny how different we are.”

“Okay, look - Donghae, do you like midnight walks?” Ryeowook interjected as he stood up from the couch so he could look back and forth between the two,

“As opposed to what?” Donghae replied,

“A moonlit walk,” Ryeowook answered,

“As opposed to moonlit walks? Sure, I guess,” he shrugged in reply,

“Okay - but why?” Ryeowook challenged,

Donghae chewed on his bottom lip a moment before answering hesitantly, “Well, there’s moonlight and… it’s night… and you’re alone with one other person - it screams romantic.”

“See Shiwon-sshi! Exactly what you said! You two are perfect for one another!” Ryeowook exclaimed triumphantly.

Shiwon turned his suspicious stare on Donghae who stared blankly back at him. Shiwon narrowed his eyes, “He’s faking it, Ryeowook - he probably just overheard us talking.”

Ryeowook turned to Donghae in askance. Donghae grinned and shrugged, “You guys just talk loud.”

Ryeowook threw his arms in the air in exasperation, “I give up on you hyungs. Break up - stay together, I give up!” He exclaimed as he stormed out of the dorm to find solace elsewhere, the door slamming behind him.

“What’s wrong with him?” Donghae asked as he pushed off the wall and came to sit right beside Shiwon on the couch.”

“No idea,” Shiwon replied as he slung an arm around Donghae, hugging him to his side, “Maybe he needs to take a nice, relaxing, long walk tonight.”

Donghae nodded in agreement as he picked up the remote and turned on the television while adding, “At midnight.”
